School Choice Bill Clears Another Hurdle
Senate Bill 1 -- The Opportunity Scholarship Act -- has been narrowly approved by the Senate Appropriations Committee by a vote of 15-11.
Better yet, the bill was strengthened as the Committee adopted an amendment that extends K-12 private school scholarship eligibilty to middle class families (originally, only families whose income is 130 percent of the poverty line were eligible for a scholarship ). The bill today will be voted on by the full Senate. Note: Three Republican Senators nearly killed the bill by siding with the Democrats and union bosses - those Republicans are: Patricia Vance, Stewart Greenleaf, and Lisa Baker.
