On May 18th, Every Registered Voter Has a Voice

On May 18, EVERY voter has a say on the ballot questions

We have received numerous emails from “independent” voters asking if they could cast a ballot even though it is a primary election. Regardless of party affiliation or lack of affiliation, every registered voter can vote on the ballot questions on May 18th.

Four questions will appear on the ballot. The first two are constitutional amendments related to restoring important checks and balances to the emergency declaration process. The proposed amendments are asking voters to answer two questions. First, should disaster emergencies declared by the Governor be limited to 21 days unless the General Assembly approves an extension? Second, should a majority of the House and Senate be able to vote to end a declared disaster emergency?

Through the Department of State, Governor Wolf has worded the questions to make it sound like the proposed amendments would put people at risk. Nothing could be further from the truth. By voting “YES” on the proposed amendments, Pennsylvanianians will be restoring checks and balances to the emergency declaration process. Voters will also ensure that future governors can protect lives in a disaster but will have to work with the legislature to address longer-term problems. The proposed changes will require justification from Governors about the decisions they are making in the name of safety.

Governor Wolf’s go-it-alone approach led to a preventable loss of life in Pennsylvania’s nursing homes, the permanent closure of small businesses, and unprecedented unemployment. It will take years for the Commonwealth’s economy to recover from the epic mishandling of the COVID-19 response. If voters approve the first two proposed amendments, they will ensure that Governor Wolf’s mistakes will not be repeated in the future.
